Valenciaport is the world’s first port to operate hydrogen-powered 4×4 trucks

Valencia is now the world’s first port to use a 4×4 truck tractor unit powered by green hydrogen to transport containers within its facilities.

This is another milestone in the Port Authority of Valencia’s (PAV) journey to attain zero-emission objectives by 2030.

On 27 April, the 4×4 terminal tractor, which arrived in the port region last week, conducted the first operational test at the Grimaldi Group’s Valencia Terminal Europa (VALTE) under the supervision of the European H2PORTS project’s inspection team.

It first ran an unladen test with just the tractor head before attaching a truck trailer and driving around the terminal. More than 40 technicians, managers, and officials from the project’s collaborating firms watched the test to see how the only leftover from the hydrogen combustion was water droplets.

“It is very important for the objective of the total decarbonisation of Valenciaport in 2030 to see that the Port of Valencia is at the forefront in Europe and at the forefront in the world when it comes to introducing the first 4X4 truck which is already operating for the first time in Valencia with green hydrogen,” stated Joan Calabuig, president of the PAV.

According to the statement, this first operation has been supervised by the technical team of the entities ATENA, VALTE, the Grimaldi Group, the National Hydrogen Centre, Carburos Metálicos and the Valenciaport Foundation as coordinator of this initiative.

“These first tests are going very well. Once again, we have managed to be the first port in Europe to test a cutting-edge technology at the service of improving operations and the sustainability of our actions,” pointed out Antonio Torregrosa, director of the Valenciaport Foundation.
