Valenciaport initiates climate adaptation strategy

The Port Authority of Valencia has commenced work on a climate change adaptation plan covering its facilities at Valencia, Sagunto and Gandia, with the objective of strengthening infrastructure resilience against the risks posed by extreme weather events, rising sea levels and shifting climatic conditions.

The initiative forms part of Valenciaport’s broader Net Zero Emissions Plan, which targets carbon neutrality across the port authority’s facilities by 2035.

The adaptation plan has been awarded to Ineco for EUR€181,229.35 excluding VAT, with a completion period of 14 months.

The work encompasses vulnerability assessments for each of the three ports, risk evaluations covering extreme weather scenarios including rough seas, heavy rainfall and heatwaves, and the development of specific adaptation measures prioritising critical infrastructure elements such as quays, breakwaters, terminals and access points.

All proposed measures will include cost-benefit analyses to assess their economic viability, and the plan will be designed around a framework of continuous monitoring and improvement.

The initiative aligns with the Strategic Framework for the Port System of General Interest issued by Puertos del Estado, which requires all Spanish state-owned ports to have implemented climate adaptation measures by 2030.

Valenciaport’s work places it among the early movers within the national port system in addressing this obligation.

Alongside the adaptation planning, a smart energy management system based on digital twin technology is scheduled for rollout across Valenciaport’s facilities during 2027, further advancing the port authority’s integrated sustainability agenda.
