US-China ports show strain as trade war eases: Who’s hurt more and what comes next?

The ongoing US-China trade war may be entering a temporary pause, but its effects have already left a distinct mark on the maritime shipping sector.



Recent data from both sides of the Pacific shows stark disruptions in cargo flows, with Chinese exporters and US West Coast ports alike feeling the strain.

At the Port of Long Beach, cargo throughput dropped by a significant 8.2% in May. Imports fell by 13.4%, while exports plunged by 18.6% year-on-year. Just down the coast, the Port of Los Angeles reported a 9% decrease in loaded imports and a 5% decline in exports.
