Wan Hai Lines has issued an update on the container vessel WAN HAI 503, which experienced a fire earlier this month.
The ship remains stable under close monitoring and is currently being towed by a salvage team near the India–Sri Lanka maritime boundary. The company said it is working with experts and salvage crews to determine a suitable port of refuge. The choice will depend on conditions for the vessel and the safe handling of fire-damaged cargo.
On August 5, Wan Hai confirmed the fire had been completely extinguished. Temperatures in the affected cargo holds continue to fall and are being closely tracked. One hold still contains firefighting seawater, which will be discharged when conditions allow to ensure hull stability during towing.
The vessel is being escorted to international waters while preparations continue with nearby ports to arrange safe berthing and cargo handling.
