UNIKAI and AKQUINET modernise O’Swaldkai Terminal

Together, UNIKAI and AKQUINET are driving the digital transformation in break bulk and RoRo handling.

UNIKAI, a subsidiary of HHLA, and IT provider AKQUINET have completed the AKIDU project, funded by Germany’s Federal Ministry of Transport, to digitalise break bulk and RoRo handling at the O’Swaldkai terminal in Hamburg.

The project introduced new tools for land-use planning, automated yard space allocation and real-time 3D terminal visualisation, enabling more efficient handling of complex cargo such as turbines, cranes and special vehicles.

UNIKAI Managing Director Hartmut Wolberg said the results provide the technologies needed to future-proof terminal processes, while AKQUINET’s Norbert Klettner highlighted the successful development of a digital twin through the CHESSCON platform.

The solution, supported by HITeC, marks a milestone in modernising Hamburg’s break bulk and RoRo operations.
