UAE and DNV to establish new maritime decarbonisation centre

H.E Suhail Al Mazrouei, United Arab Emirates (UAE) Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, and Knut Ørbeck-Nilssen, CEO of DNV Maritime, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to create a new Decarbonisation Centre in UAE.

According to DNV, the Marine Environment Protection Committee’s (MEPC) 80th session this month showed that shipping is now on an accelerating path towards full decarbonisation.

The new UAE Maritime Decarbonisation Centre, the new joint initiative of the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure of the United Arab Emirates and DNV, is designed to put this collaborative focus at the centre of sustainable decarbonisation.

Additionally, it is expected to work to connect stakeholders from across the maritime industry and beyond, to become a driving force for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions globally.

The centre aims to work on industry-leading joint research projects, collaborate with government, industry and academia, and attract and develop new talent in the industry. It will also focus on new technologies and provide a central hub of information on decarbonisation solutions.

“The establishment of the UAE Maritime Decarbonization Centre reflects our unwavering commitment to addressing climate change and promoting sustainable practices within the maritime industry,” said H.E Suhail Al Mazrouei, UAE Minister.
