Two bodies recovered from fire-hit oil tanker in Chittagong

The bodies of at least two seafarers have been recovered from an oil tanker in Chittagong port after the fire that broke out today (30 September) in the morning.

The tanker Banglar Jyoti, owned by Bangladesh Shipping Corporation (BSC), was moored at the oil jetty of Chittagong port where a blast occurred at 11 am (local time) and fire broke out.

The fire came under control at 2.30 pm through continuous efforts of eight fire fighting units.

Fire service officials could not ascertain the reasons behind the blast and fire at the crude oil tanker which carries oil from the mother vessels in the outer anchorage of the port to the Dolphin Jetty for Eastern Refinery.

Omar Faruk, Secretary of Chittagong Port Authority, said the fire is now under control. “Now we are checking if there are any obstacles in the port channel,” he added.
