Transpacific crash may normalise charter market

Containership charter rates, which have defied the freight slump for some time, could be peaking, as some small ships chartered by opportunistic operators for transpacific services, are being diverted to the Persian Gulf as freight rates have tanked, according to Linerlytica.

Transpacific freight rates, particularly to the US West Coast, have lost almost all the hikes achieved after a grace period in harsh US tariffs on Chinese imports was granted on 12 May, and averaged $2,772/40-foot container on 20 June. The spike in rates tempted regional operators like China United Lines and TS Lines to resume transpacific sailings, using 2,000-3,000 teu ships.
