First-Ever Shipping-Energy Bunkering Alliance
For the first time, a major shipping company and an energy provider are teaming up to co-develop and operate LNG bunkering services.
TotalEnergies and CMA CGM have signed an agreement to form a 50/50 joint venture focused on LNG bunkering logistics. The new company will be based in the port of Rotterdam and will serve the broader Amsterdam-Rotterdam-Antwerp (ARA) region.
Besides, the partnership marks a major milestone in accelerating maritime decarbonization and strengthening LNG infrastructure in Europe.
Expanding LNG Infrastructure in Europe
A new 20,000 m³ LNG bunker vessel will be deployed in Rotterdam by 2028. It will be jointly operated by the two companies.
Moreover, the joint venture will offer full-service logistics, from access at the Gate terminal to bunker delivery for a range of vessels, including CMA CGM’s fleet and ships from other operators.
Also, the new vessel will work alongside TotalEnergies’ existing LNG bunker ship, Gas Agility, already in operation in the ARA region since 2020. The partners plan to create operational synergies between the two vessels to improve flexibility and efficiency.
A Long-Term LNG Supply Agreement
In addition, to power its growing fleet of dual-fuel LNG vessels, expected to reach 123 ships by 2029, CMA CGM will receive up to 360,000 tons of LNG annually from TotalEnergies. The long-term supply deal runs from 2028 through 2040.
Executive Support from Both Sides
Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies, said the partnership highlights a shared commitment to reduce emissions in maritime transport. “LNG is the most mature and immediately available solution,” he noted.
Additionally, CMA CGM Chairman and CEO Rodolphe Saadé stated that this joint venture is a concrete step to scale up alternative fuels and accelerate the decarbonization of global trade.
Lastly, the joint venture is subject to regulatory approvals.
