COSCO builds the world’s first zero-carbon terminal in Tianjin

The Second Container Terminal of Tianjin Port has successfully integrated the world’s first smart green energy system for zero-carbon terminals to its grid.

Compared with traditional terminals, COSCO Shipping’s terminal in China is powered by wind and photovoltaic energy, achieving zero carbon emission in energy consumption and production, according to the Chinese port operator.

During the construction of the terminal, COSCO Shipping Tianjin Goldwind New Energy has given play to its technical advantage to provide zero-carbon solutions for the smart container terminal at Section C of Tianjin Port, realising 100% self-sufficiency in the provision of clean energy for the terminal.

Phase I of Tianjin Port Section C Terminal Smart Green Energy System Project includes two 4.5MW distributed wind turbines, which are expected to generate 23.3 million kWh of electricity annually and reduce the carbon emission by 20,600 tons per year.

This is therefore projected to help in achieving 100% self-sufficiency in energy consumption and zero carbon emission throughout the whole phase, according to a statement.

In addition, the 1.4MW PV project, which is under construction, is anticipated to be connected to the grid in the middle of January 2022.

The two sides will further deepen their cooperation on the project’s Phase II construction for wind power deployment and on other new energy projects to support the endeavours to build zero-carbon smart terminals at Tianjin Port.
