Global merchandise trade is enjoying a sudden growth spurt, but shipping executives warn the boom could prove as short-lived as a sugar rush.
As Bloomberg posted, the World Trade Organization’s latest Goods Trade Barometer jumped to 103.5 in the first quarter of 2025, its strongest reading since August 2021. WTO economists attribute almost the entire gain to importers front-loading orders before a slate of US tariff increases takes effect this summer.
