Tariff concerns drive record-breaking June at port of Los Angeles

The Port of Los Angeles set a new benchmark in June, handling 892,340 TEUs an 8% increase compared to June 2024.

This marked the busiest June in the port’s 117-year history.

Gene Seroka, Executive Director of the Port of Los Angeles, explained that some importers are fast-tracking their year-end holiday shipments in anticipation of possible tariff hikes later this year.  He added that as a result, July could become our peak shipping month, as businesses move goods earlier than usual to hedge against trade uncertainty.

The port also wrapped up its fiscal year on June 30, processing a total of 10.5 million TEUsmarking its third consecutive fiscal year surpassing the 10 million TEU milestone.

June 2025 saw 470,450 TEUs in loaded imports, a 10% year-over-year increase. Loaded exports totaled 126,144 TEUs, up 3% from 2024, while empty containers reached 295,746 TEUs, a 7% gain.

For the first half of 2025, the port has processed 4,955,812 TEUs overall, reflecting a 5% rise compared to the same period last year.
