STS and RTG Paceco-Mitsui cranes to be delivered to Long Beach terminal

The container handling equipment manufacturer Paceco has secured an order from the container terminal at the Port of Long Beach International Transportation Service (ITS) for five new Paceco-Mitsui ship to shore (STS) portainer cranes and five Paceco-Mitsui rubber-tire-gantry (RTG) transtainer cranes.

Projected to be delivered from the Japanese engineering company Mitsui E&S Machinery in two shipments, the cranes are anticipated to be put into operation in early 2023.

Featuring an outreach of more than 70 metres and a lifting capacity of 53.3 metres over the seaside rail, the five 65 long ton capacity portainer cranes, which constitute a complement to the existing ten Paceco-Mitsui portainer cranes at ITS, will be the largest STS cranes in the Californian terminal.

The cranes are part of a modernisation and increase capacity project for the terminal of the US port, aiming to support operations in up to 24,000 TEU vessels with a width of 25 containers.

Moreover, the cranes will dispose of features for increased safety and optimal productivity, including an operator assist system, and laser and camera systems for anti-collision, according to a statement.

ITS has also ordered five near-zero-emission (NZE) model hybrid transtainer RTGs, the latest generation of hybrid RTGs offered by Paceco, which reduce the fuel consumption and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by approximately 70% compared to conventional RTGs.
