Stena Line aquires strategic port in Latvia

Stena Line reinforces its strategic commitment to Baltic Sea trade development and regional resilience through the acquisition of port operations in Liepaja, Latvia.

The maritime operator will acquire full ownership of port operator Terrabalt in Liepaja.

Liepaja port operates within the Liepāja Special Economic Zone framework, a designated free trade zone established in 1997 encompassing port infrastructure, industrial zones, and airport facilities.

Stena Line currently maintains the Liepaja–Travemünde maritime route utilizing two vessels.

Niclas Mårtensson, CEO of Stena Line, states that the investment in Liepaja demonstrates our continued commitment as a long-term strategic partner to Latvia and our contribution to advancing the country’s competitive positioning and economic growth. He also added that through this acquisition, they enhance our strategic positioning and secure sustainable operational conditions for the regional customer base.

Stena Line’s Baltic Sea network infrastructure encompasses services on the Ventspils–Nynäshamn route operated by two vessels.

Since May 2023, Stena Line has maintained ownership of port operations in Ventspils, the country’s second-largest port facility. The Gdynia–Karlskrona route operates with three vessels, with the company holding majority ownership in port operator KBP.

The Trelleborg–Rostock route utilizes Sweden’s exclusive two rail-capacity ferries, which provide critical rail traffic redundancy and continental European connectivity.

The port operator acquisition remains subject to approval by Latvian competition authorities and relevant regulatory institutions.

Until regulatory approval, existing ownership will maintain terminal operations.
