Steel imports on unprecedented tear at Port of Liverpool

Peel Ports Group has outlined its strategy to transform the Port of Liverpool into a premier global steel hub following a standout year for bulk steel imports in 2024, with a record 702,000 tonnes processed at the site.

This achievement exceeds the previous record by over 50,000 tonnes and comes on the heels of substantial infrastructure investments by Peel Ports Group aimed at enhancing its support for the steel sector.

Recently, the company allocated £2 million (US$2.5 million) for the creation of a new deep water bulk berth at the port’s Alexandra Complex, thereby expanding its cargo handling capabilities.

The Port of Liverpool is equipped to handle a variety of vessels, including Handymax bulk carriers.

Phil Hall, Mersey Port Director at Peel Ports Group, commented that the figures underscore a commitment to establishing Liverpool as the UK’s leading hub for essential commodities across various industries, bolstered by continuous investment in port infrastructure, market expansion, port-centric services, and our skilled teams.
