St1 launches Swedish-produced LBG bunkering in Gothenburg

St1 and its subsidiary St1 Biokraft have, for the first time, supplied their own Swedish-produced liquefied biomethane (LBG) to the shipping industry.

The delivery was made to Terntank’s vessel Tern Ocean during a recent bunkering operation at the Port of Gothenburg, marking a significant step toward large-scale adoption of alternative marine fuels.

The operation, conducted at quay 519, served as a critical pilot for St1 and St1 Biokraft, testing their capability as LBG suppliers for maritime use. It also acted as a stress test for collaboration across the full value chain involving Terntank, gas infrastructure provider Nordion Energi, and the biomethane producers themselves.

Sweden’s Port of Gothenburg sees liquefied biomethane as a key element in its green shipping corridors initiative — aimed at enabling fossil-free logistics chains.

St1 and St1 Biokraft have ambitious plans to become major suppliers of liquefied biomethane for shipping, with several production plants set to launch across Sweden in the coming years.
