SPC & SPGC recognized for carbon reduction efforts

Sociedad Portuaria de Caldera (SPC) and Sociedad Portuaria Granelera de Caldera (SPGC) have been recognized under Costa Rica’s Carbon Neutral Country Program (PPCN), an initiative by the Ministry of Environment and Energy (MINAE) promoting the decarbonization of logistics and industrial operations.

The recognition highlights progress made in reducing carbon emissions through several measures: upgrading to fuel-efficient equipment, shortening truck wait times, using synthetic lubricants, switching to inverter-type air conditioners, installing LED lighting, and improving solid waste management. These actions reflect a comprehensive strategy for energy efficiency and emissions control.

“One of the main challenges has been identifying improvement projects that are feasible within the concession horizon. We have used tools such as internal audits, problem-solving techniques and participatory processes involving all personnel,” said Ricardo Ospina, CEO.

The company’s Management Systems and Sustainability Department leads the initiative, working closely with equipment maintenance, engineering, and internal audit teams. Their collaboration has been key in meeting PPCN standards and advancing sustainability targets.

SPC uses measurable indicators to track environmental performance, supporting its goal to act as a responsible port operator. The next milestone is achieving the Carbon Reduction+ category by 2026, recognizing even deeper emissions reductions.
