South Pacific International Container Terminal receives new Mitsui hybrid RTGs

South Pacific International Container Terminal (SPICT) acquired two new Mitsui hybrid rubber tired gantries (RTGs) as part of its efforts to enhance operation capabilities.

Powered by a combination of a smaller diesel engine and lithium-ion battery, the Mitsui hybrids will contribute to more efficient landside operation resulting in faster turnaround time for outside trucks. Additionally, the hybrid mechanism helps reduce the terminal’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

SPICT, International Container Terminal Services, Inc.’s (ICTSI) operation in the Port of Lae, Papua New Guinea, has also taken delivery of two post-Panamax ship-to-shore (STS) cranes late last year.

The STS cranes are the first of their kind and currently the largest port equipment in the country.

“The receipt of two electric STS cranes for the berth was the first big step of our terminal decarbonization journey, and we are very excited to receive these Hybrid RTG cranes, which show SPICT’s ongoing efforts to reduce its carbon footprint from yard operations,” said Robert Maxwell, CEO of ICTSI South Pacific.
