South Carolina Ports (SC Ports) achieved a container throughput record in January, handling 226,515 TEU at Wando Welch Terminal, North Charleston Terminal and Hugh K. Leatherman Terminal, marking a year-on-year increase of 4.7%
Thi performance also makes January the 11th consecutive month with a monthly year-over-year increase, according to SC Ports data.
“The global supply chain continues to see great strain from handling unprecedented amounts of cargo,” commented Jim Newsome, South Carolina Ports CEO.
During the last month, the US port handled 125,452 pier containers, which accounts for containers of any size, representing a 3.5% rise over January 2021.
In addition, loaded imports amounted to 117,181 TEU, which translates to a year-on-year increase of nearly 23%, as consumers continue to buy more retail goods.
“With record throughput volumes, we are experiencing a record number of import containers on our terminals awaiting delivery,” noted Newsome.
Regarding the inland terminals, Inland Port Greer reported 9,301 rail moves in January, while Inland Port Dillon reported 1,942 rail moves.
So far in the fiscal year (FY) 2022 which started in July 2021, SC Ports has handled more than 1.64 million TEU, representing a growth of almost 15% over the same period of the previous FY.
