Sixth Annual POLB photo Contest Winners

Free photography exhibit at Expo Arts Center open through Oct. 28

The Arts Council for Long Beach announced the winners of the sixth annual Port of Long Beach PHOTO competition on Friday evening (10/05/2018), during Bixby Knolls’ First Fridays, as the photography exhibit kicked off its gallery show at the Expo Arts Center.

Featuring striking, original images of the Port captured by 69 amateur and professional photographers, the show is held each October in conjunction with the Arts Council as part of Long Beach Arts Month. The free exhibit, open to the public Wednesdays through Saturdays, runs through Oct. 28.

The Arts Council’s panel of judges awarded the top prize to Susan Slade of Long Beach for “Triumphant,” a color-soaked photo with a unique perspective of a cargo ship leaving the Port. Second place went to Maren Cole of San Pedro for “To Other Ports,” a sharp image of the back of two ships heading out to sea. Third place was awarded to Eric Rodriguez of Long Beach for “Admiring the View,” a graphic close-up of the back of a ship, complete with a crew member watching the Port disappear from view.

New this year, the winners of the last five PHOTO programs were invited back to photograph a special tour of the construction of the Port’s replacement for the Gerald Desmond Bridge. Their work is also displayed at the exhibit.

The Port is also conducting an online “fan favorite” award program. Go to www.polb.com/photocontest and vote for your favorite. The winning photographer and one lucky voter will receive a package of Port promotional items.

Hours for the Port PHOTO exhibit at the Expo Arts Center are noon to 5 p.m., Wednesdays through Saturdays. Admission is free. The Expo Arts Center is located at 4321 Atlantic Ave., Long Beach 90807.
