Shanghai Port container volumes lose ground in January

China’s Shanghai port has handled less container volumes in January 2020 compared to a year ago, according to Shanghai International Port Group (SIPG).

The world’s busiest container port processed 3.606 million TEU in January, a decline of 4% compared to 3.752 million TEU handled in the same period in 2019.

Its total cargo throughput plunged 13.2% to 41.750 million tons from the previous year’s 48.107 million tons.

SIPG reopened its operations on 10 February and, in the light of cargo backlogs in its terminals since the outbreak of novel coronavirus (COVID-19), shippers will be allowed direct shipside loading and pickup on trial from 1 March to ease the congestion.
