Seven workers were injured on Saturday, July 12, following the collapse of a block under construction at Imabari Shipbuilding Co., Ltd.’s Marugame Plant. The incident occurred at approximately 11:52 a.m. in an outdoor block assembly area on the south side of the No. 1 Dock.
The accident took place while workers were assembling a ship block measuring approximately 23.6 meters in length, 8.1 meters in width, and 2.5 meters in height. During final binding operations, the block began to tilt and eventually collapsed. As a result, seven workers on or near the structure fell or were thrown from it.
All injured workers were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Medical staff confirmed that none of the injuries are life-threatening.
Imabari Shipbuilding has stated that it is cooperating fully with the authorities currently investigating the cause of the collapse. The company emphasized that it views the incident with the utmost seriousness and is taking steps to prevent a recurrence through a company-wide review of safety protocols.
Operations in the affected area have been temporarily suspended pending further assessment.
