Second hand boxship market keeps upward trend

The number of second hand transactions in the container ship market has remained high, according to UK shipbroker Braemar, with the Germany-based Elbdeich Reederei acquiring three sister boxships from the German shipowner Wessels Reederei.

[s2If is_user_logged_in()]The 1,036TEU container vessels, Wes Amelie, Wes Janine and Wes Carina, which were built in 2012 by Jiangdong Shipyard, were sold at a price of €24 million (US$29 million), according to the latest Braemar report.

In addition, the UK broker reported that the 4,506TEU vessel CO Osaka built in 2008 by Samsung Heavy Industries was committed at US$20.5 million, the 2013-built by Hanjin Heavy Industries (Hanjin H.I.) Hedda Schulte of 3,390TEU capacity has been sold at US$15.2 million to undisclosed buyers and the 3,390TEU Sphene built by Hanjin H.I. in 2007 has been sold on private terms to Greek owners.

“With even standard 1100s now commanding five figures, we expect more small-Feeders to be transacted,” noted Braemar.

Furthermore, the industry saw four container ship deliveries during the last week, according to the report, with three feeders and a new panamax vessel received by their owners.

Operators are continuing to support newbuilding orders from tonnage providers with Seaspan, in particular, being very active recently with new orders against MSC and ZIM charters.
