Sea Consortium behind five boxship order

Sea Consortium, the company behind X-Press Feeders has returned to Zhoushan Changhong Shipbuilding for more ships with brokers reporting three firm orders with two options.

[s2If is_user_logged_in()]Three vessels of 3,100TEU each have been placed, with options for another two similar ships, priced at between US$33 million and US$35 million each, and scheduled for delivery between 2022 and 2023.

Container News‘ attempts to contact Sea Consortium for comments were unsuccessful.

The company had taken delivery of a pair of 2,800TEU ships, X-Press Mekong and X-Press Pearl, from the same shipbuilder earlier this year.

In December 2020, Sea Consortium also purchased MH Green, a 3,158TEU newbuilding resale from Turkish ship owner Arkas Denizcilik, which had commissioned the ship at Zhoushan Changhong.

The yard is also said to have won half a dozen 2,500TEU ships from Goto Shipping International (also known as Ruiyang Shipping), for delivery between 2022 and 2024.

The recent rebound in container freight rates brought record earnings to liner operators, and tight market capacity is encouraging owners to commission newbuildings. The current boxship orderbook is at a four-year high, exceeding 100 vessels of nearly 3 million TEU, representing 15% of the active fleet.
