South Carolina Ports (SC Ports) continues to handle record cargo volumes amid ongoing supply chain challenges, while at the same time, the port said it is making significant progress with the liquidity of terminals and berths.
In more detail, SC Ports has announced the highest number of cargoes handled in April, managing to report a record cargo in the port of Charleston for the 14th consecutive month.
These results are due to stable retail imports, which increased by 34% in April compared to last year, according to the port data.
“With ongoing supply chain challenges and record cargo volumes, SC Ports remains focused on deploying responsive, creative solutions to return terminal and berth fluidity to normalcy for our customers,” SC Ports CEO, Jim Newsome said.
“We are in a strong position as we have proactively invested more than $2 billion into our infrastructure ahead of demand,” he added.
SC Ports handled 264,099 TEU at Wando Welch Terminal, North Charleston Terminal, and Leatherman Terminal in April, up 17% year-on-year. So far for the fiscal year 2022, it has moved 2.4 million TEU from July to April, up 15% yearly.
Additionally, April marks an all-time record for pier containers, which correspond to boxes of any size. SC Ports handled 145,779 pier containers last month, up 16% on a yearly basis.
During the current fiscal year, SC Ports has moved 1.3 million pier containers, up almost 15% from the same period last year.
Meanwhile, SC Port’s two rail-served inland ports in Greer and Dillon reported a combined 14,945 rail moves in April.
