SAAM unveils 2030 Sustainability Strategy

SAAM marked its 63rd anniversary by unveiling its comprehensive 2030 Sustainability Strategy, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable growth with a clear, actionable plan and measurable goals.

The strategy is built on four pillars: Reportability and Risk Management – People and Social Engagement – Environment and Climate Action – Sustainable Development and Projects.

“Our goal is to become a leading global operator in the towage business. Sustainability is a key component of our management. With this renewed strategy we are making concrete commitments to operate profitably and sustainably over time,” stated Macario Valdés, CEO at SAAM.

The strategy is also aligned with the standards of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), and the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI).

Key 2030 objectives include training all onboard personnel under the SAAM Towage curriculum, incorporating 10% sustainable-propulsion tugs into the fleet, offsetting 65% of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (using 2021 as a baseline), and certifying all operations to quality and environmental standards.

According to the company, notable progress is already evident. Recent initiatives include the addition of two electric tugs to the Canadian fleet and the decrease of CO2 emissions by 5,000 metric tons this year. SAAM is also preparing to launch Latin America’s first electric tugboat in Chile by 2025.

Thanks to these efforts, SAAM has been listed on the DJSI Chile for eight consecutive years and is part of the MILA Pacific Alliance Select index.
