The Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping welcomed Rio Tinto as its new strategic partner.
The global mining group Rio Tinto is committed to a long-term strategic partnership and contribution to the development of zero carbon technologies and solutions for the shipping industry, according to a statement.
In October 2021, Rio Tinto announced it would accelerate efforts to achieve net zero emissions caused by its shipping activities by 2050.
At the same time, the mining group expects to meet the International Maritime Organization’s decarbonisation target to reduce shipping intensity by 40% by 2025, five years before the IMO deadline.
In fact, the company expects to introduce net zero emission vessels in its portfolio by 2030.
Welcoming Rio Tinto to the Center, CEO Bo Cerup-Simonsen said, “This partnership shows the true potential of working with all the different parts of the shipping ecosystem.”
“As a cargo owner and leading charterer, Rio Tinto is in a position to make real influence in the industry by acting as a first mover, pushing for change and establishing sustainable value-chain solutions,” he commented.
