Rijeka Gateway enters final testing phase

Rijeka Gateway terminal

Rijeka Gateway has started its final testing phase with the arrival of its first container vessel and first test train. The terminal is the region’s most technologically advanced and is preparing for its official opening.

The M/V Cape Fulmar arrived from Port Said, Egypt. The vessel is 170 meters long, 25 meters wide, and can carry about 1,440 TEU. It will remain docked for four weeks. During this time, teams will train and test operations under real conditions.

Testing includes planning, loading, unloading, securing cargo, and coordinating container movements with terminal vehicles.

The terminal also welcomed its first test train, operated by ENNA Logic. The 500-meter train arrived with empty containers for RMG crane testing. It was split into two compositions across two tracks.

These steps highlight Rijeka Gateway’s readiness and strong teamwork. They also show the terminal’s focus on multimodal transport for future operations.

The first trucks and trains with export cargo are expected in early September. The first commercial vessel will arrive on September 12, 2025. At first, ships will call every Friday, with frequency increasing soon after.

The terminal now employs over 220 people. In 2025, staff received more than 45,000 hours of training. This shows the company’s commitment to building a skilled workforce.

“Two years after construction began, our terminal is now fully equipped and ready for trial operations,” said Peter Corfitsen, CEO of Rijeka Gateway. “The arrival of the test vessel and train marks the beginning of a critical, yet exciting phase.”

Rijeka Gateway is the largest private logistics investment in Croatia. It is a joint venture between APM Terminals and ENNA Group. Phase One will handle 650,000 TEU and serve ships of up to 18,000 TEU. The project positions Rijeka as a key entry point for goods to Central and Western Europe.
