Rail sector gains ground in Barcelona

The Port of Barcelona has recorded container rail volumes of 161,735TEU, presenting a grown of 46% during the first six months of 2021, compared to the same period of last year.

This increase is driven by the commitment of many retailers and industrial companies to transport goods by train and the return to activity of the Pla de Vilanoveta’s terminal (Lleida).

Furthermore, the container volumes handled by rail constitute 16.1% out of total volumes, recording the biggest rail share ever at the Spanish port.

President of Barcelona Port, Damià Calvet explained the significance of rail transport to the boost of decarbonisation, saying, “in the last year, the movement of goods by rail in the Port of Barcelona has saved 42,700 tons of CO2 with the removal of 700 trucks a day from the road network, avoiding burning 14 million litres of fuel,” which corresponds to the plant of 256,000 trees in a year.
