Quebec backs Montreal Port expansion

The Government of Quebec will invest C$55 million (US$43.22 million) in the development of the Montreal Port Authority (MPA)’s expansion project at Contrecoeur.

[s2If is_user_logged_in()]In a joint announcement today made by the Minister for Transport and Minister Responsible for the Metropolis and the Montreal Region Chantal Rouleau, the Minister of Transport and Minister Responsible for the Estrie Region François Bonnardel, among others, the ministers said the financial support will allow the MPA to carry out the start-up phase for the project, including the site preparation and earthworks, among other things, and to build a visual and sound barrier.

Funding for the Contrcoeur terminal remains conditional on obtaining the required authorisations, but MPA President and CEO Martin Imbleau, said “The Government of Quebec’s backing is an important signal for the MPA and reflects a shared commitment to provide local businesses with a highly efficient supply chain.”

According to a Port of Montreal statement the expansion at Contrecoeur will lead to the creation of 5,000 jobs during construction and 1,000 jobs during its operation. While container handling capacity will be increased this will also build on the transportation ecosystem that 6,300 logistics businesses rely on and will encourage further regional growth.[/s2If]
