QNX solution supports FERNRIDE’s autonomous terminal tractors

QNX, a division of BlackBerry Limited, has announced that its QNX® OS for Safety is now integrated into FERNRIDE’s autonomous terminal tractor solution, enhancing its reliability and security in safety-critical logistics operations.

FERNRIDE is revolutionizing container terminal operations by improving efficiency, safety, and cost-effectiveness. With increasing global demand for streamlined logistics, container terminals are turning to advanced technology to tackle labor shortages, tight delivery schedules, and round-the-clock operational demands.

In response, FERNRIDE has developed an autonomous terminal tractor solution, advancing toward compliance with the European Machinery Directive (Directive 2006/42/EC) and EU Declaration of Conformity (CE Marking). By leveraging QNX’s embedded software, FERNRIDE has accelerated development, bringing them closer to these regulatory milestones.

Certified to ISO 26262 ASIL D, QNX OS for Safety provides a secure foundation for advanced automotive solutions, ensuring compliance with stringent EU safety regulations. By adopting QNX OS for Safety, FERNRIDE is able to meet functional safety requirements efficiently, allowing its team to focus on innovation rather than operating system certification.

With its POSIX-compliant architecture, QNX OS for Safety simplifies the transition for developers familiar with Linux. This enabled FERNRIDE’s team to seamlessly integrate both a safety-critical component based on QNX and a non-safety component based on Linux, ensuring an efficient development process while maintaining the highest safety standards.

QNX powers critical applications across various industries and is trusted by leading OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers, including BMW, Bosch, Honda, Mercedes-Benz, Toyota, Volkswagen, and Volvo.
