PTP launches berth zero to boost capacity

Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP), a joint venture between Malaysia’s MMC Group and Netherlands-based APM Terminals, will develop a new berth, Berth Zero, as part of its expansion plan. MMC Engineering Sdn. Bhd. and Antara Koh (M) Sdn. Bhd. (MMCE-AKSB JV) will lead the project on PTP’s undeveloped land.

The project includes dredging, reclamation, and construction of a 360-meter berth along PTP’s linear wharf. It will feature four quay cranes and a yard prepared for electric rubber-tyred gantry (e-RTG) cranes.

PTP Chairman Tan Sri Che Khalib Mohamad Noh said, “Berth Zero unlocks new capacity and supports growing demand. We aim to raise the terminal’s handling capacity to around 16 million TEUs within two and a half years. This expansion strengthens Johor’s and Malaysia’s position in global trade.”

PTP CEO Mark Hardiman added, “Berth Zero is our next major expansion since Berths 13 and 14 in 2014. The new quay cranes, expected by 2028, will help the terminal reach 16 million TEUs. This project future-proofs our infrastructure and reinforces PTP as a leading transshipment hub.”

MMCE CEO Mohamad Asroll Mansor said, “We are proud to support PTP’s vision. This project reflects our commitment to engineering excellence, innovation, and high safety standards.”

AKSB Managing Director Dato’ Ir. Tay Yew Chong added, “Our 23-year partnership with MMCE continues to deliver projects safely and efficiently. Achieving zero lost-time injuries remains a shared responsibility and a mark of success.”

The award followed a transparent, competitive tender, evaluating technical strength, safety performance, and delivery capability. The signing ceremony took place at PTP’s premises.

PTP recently ranked as the world’s fastest-growing port by Alphaliner, with +15.4% growth in the first half of 2025. It handled an average of 1.1 million TEUs per month, peaking at 1.2 million TEUs from April to June 2025. The port achieved over 15,000 moves in a single 12-hour shift, reflecting its operational excellence.
