PSA Antwerp joins ZEPA

PSA Antwerp has officially joined the Zero Emission Port Alliance (ZEPA), becoming the latest major terminal operator to commit to accelerating the shift toward battery-electric port equipment and net-zero emissions.

ZEPA brings together a global network of ports, equipment manufacturers, and terminal operators around a common mission: decarbonizing port operations by scaling up clean technologies and overcoming barriers to electrification.

For PSA Antwerp, the move is a natural extension of its parent company’s broader climate strategy. The PSA Group has pledged to cut carbon emissions by 50% by 2030 (from 2019 levels), with a longer-term goal of reaching net-zero by 2050.

One of the cornerstones of that effort is the company’s Green Straddle Carrier Program, an initiative focused on reducing emissions from its fleet of straddle carriers.

”Straddle carriers are essential for our daily terminal operations but are also responsible for the vast majority of our direct emissions in Belgium,” said Francis De Ruytter, Regional Head Sustainability, PSA Europe, Mediterranean, and the Americas.

”Equipment from different manufacturers often lacks full interoperability, and there are very few standardized charging infrastructure solutions available. On top of that, battery-electric port equipment requires significant investments,” commented Edward Tah, Managing Director, PSA Belgium.
