Project for increasing capacity in Dar es Salaam

DAR ES SALAAM port will be able to accommodate and offload seven major ships at a go after completion of Dar es Salaam Gateway Maritime Programme (DGMP) project.

This capacity is six more ships than what the port currently accommodates. The project will also enable the port to reduce traffic of big ships waiting to offload cargo.

Deputy Minister for Works, Transport and Communication, Mr Atashasta Nditiye stated yesterday that with such capacity, big ships will no longer need to head to Mombasa first to reduce cargo before docking at Tanzania’s port, and instead they will dock straight at the port.

Mr Nditiye made the remarks yesterday at the project area at the Dar es Salaam Port. “There was the obstacle of soft soil at Roro berth which is part of DGMP project that needed special treatment for it to be able to support heavy load.

This was the cause of the delay, as it was to be handed over this October and is now expected to be complete by June 2019 ,” noted Mr Nditiye.

He further said that after facing the challenge, contractors were given Berth number one to work on, and it is estimated to be complete by late November this year and will start operations from December this year.
