Positive Momentum at African Transit Ports Despite Limited Investment

As the security crisis in the Red Sea persists, global shipping routes continue to shift—elevating ports across Sub-Saharan Africa as increasingly vital transit hubs in the evolving maritime landscape.

Among the most notable beneficiaries is Mombasa Port in Kenya. A steady rise in its connectivity coincides with the completion of its Berth 23 upgrade. The project, finalized in early 2024, has expanded Mombasa’s capacity and enabled it to absorb a greater share of redirected maritime traffic.
