Ports of Genoa set new box volume records in 2021

The Italian ports of Genoa, Savona and Vado Ligure set a new annual record in container traffic, handling more than 2,781,000 TEU in 2021, which is an increase of 11.3% over the previous year and 4.2% compared to the pre-pandemic year of 2019.

Total cargo throughput rose by 10.3% year-on-year at the three Italian ports, which exceeded 64,485,100 tonnes. Western Ligurian Sea Port Authority noted that this performance was achieved despite the ongoing disruptions to the global supply chain.

Ships calling at the ports of Genoa, Savona and Vado Ligure were 7,224 in 2021, reflecting a rise of 6.3% in incoming calls over the previous year.

Port officials commented that key drivers to the growth in traffic are the completion of the operational start-up phase of Vado Gateway and the opening of the Bettolo-Genoa Mediterranean Gateway Terminal at the end of 2020.
