Port of Valencia continues to boost rail cargo transportation

The Port Authority of Valencia (PAV) said it maintains its strategic commitment to promoting rail freight transportation.

The Spanish port reported 2,180 cargo trains (an average of 87 per week), 45,311 waggons, 498 metres in average length, 116,792 TEUs, 30,642 vehicles, or 1,154,072 tonnes of products in the first half of the year. All of these figures are improved compared with the corresponding ones in 2022.

Thus, between January and June of this year, a total of 2,180 trains entered or exited the Port of Valencia, with a weekly average of 87 compared to 83 the previous year. There have even been weeks when almost a hundred convoys have passed through.

“The railway is a key element in the structure of movements of the Port of Valencia, as the data show. Our objective is to continue increasing this traffic quota, betting on the train, the long-distance lines and the improvement of the infrastructures of our inland network. A commitment that not only translates into the Valencian precinct but also includes the Port of Sagunto with works that are progressing at a good pace to provide this precinct with direct rail service,” stated Joan Calabuig, president of the Port Authority of Valencia.

Additionally, the average length of the trains was 495 metres, up from 493 metres the previous year. The total number of TEUs reached 116,792, translating to an increase of 8% over the same period in 2022.

In terms of cargo, total rail traffic entering or departing the Port of Valencia was 1,154,072 tonnes, an 11% growth over the first half of the previous year.
