Port of Salalah invests in eco-efficient port equipment

Port of Salalah has invested in 16 eco-efficient rubber-tired gantry (RTG) cranes and three mobile harbour cranes to expand operations, improve container handling capabilities, as well as reduce its environmental impact.

Oman’s largest port has already taken delivery of 12 out of the 16 new eco-efficient RTG cranes from the heavy-duty equipment manufacturer Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries (ZPMC). The cranes are estimated to be operational by January 2022.

In addition, the Omani port has ordered three new mobile harbour cranes from the machine manufacturing company Liebherr, two of which are expected to arrive in February 2022, while the third will be received in April 2022, according to a statement.

The port of the Middle East stated that the contract with ZPMC and Liebherr is a part of its future capacity expansion investments to ensure that it is equipped with the latest technologies and equipment, to support local and international business customers.

The agreement also aligns with Oman’s 2040 Vision, elevating infrastructure as a key economic instrument to further grow the transportation and logistics sector.

“Our investment in the latest RTG and mobile harbour cranes demonstrates our long-term commitment to optimise operational efficiencies and cargo handling services while accommodating existing and new trade,” said Mark Hardiman, Port of Salalah’s CEO.

The new RTG cranes are an important step in the terminal’s long-term plan to have zero-carbon emissions-reducing fuel burn by 20%. Fitted with the latest Siemens technology Simotion D with S & 1500 programmable logic controller (PLC), they can lift 41 tons, according to a statement.

They can also be fully monitored remotely and integrated with the asset digitisation system that is currently being installed in the terminal to monitor production and efficiency, in addition to laser anti-collision systems to provide protection to machinery and pedestrians.
