Port of Rotterdam extends partnership for clean fuel and energy with VARO Energy

The Port of Rotterdam Authority is committed to maintaining its utilization of clean fuel and energy sources for its vessels and critical infrastructure, including radar stations.

In pursuit of this objective, CEO and interim COO Boudewijn Siemons has signed a new agreement with VARO Energy Group. VARO’s products emerged as the top choice in the Dutch port’s tender process for the most environmentally friendly energy carrier.

Since 2018, the port of Rotterdam has been leveraging VARO’s HVO100 (100% Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) for its fleet. This biofuel, derived entirely from sustainable sources, substantially reduces CO2 emissions by up to 89% compared to traditional diesel fuel.

Moreover, HVO can seamlessly blend with conventional diesel in any proportion and is compatible with all existing diesel engines without requiring modifications. Consequently, HVO stands out as a highly accessible and cost-effective means of curbing CO2 emissions.

Aligned with the Port of Rotterdam Authority’s policy, there is a gradual transition plan towards emission-free vessels commencing from 2025 onwards. The supplier has been tasked with exploring various fuel and oil alternatives to support this transition, in line with the Port Authority’s air quality objectives. This may involve the provision of alternative energy carriers like hydrogen, methanol, biofuel, and other synthetic fuels.
