Port of Rotterdam develops liquid hydrogen facility

Air Products’ new liquid hydrogen production facility in the Rotterdam port area has exceeded 65 percent completion and remains on track to become operational in 2027.

Upon commissioning, it will be the largest liquid hydrogen facility in Europe, further consolidating Rotterdam’s position as a leading hydrogen hub on the continent.

The plant will significantly expand the availability of liquid hydrogen across European markets, addressing growing demand from a broad range of sectors including electronics manufacturing, space applications, industrial processing, road mobility, maritime operations, aviation and emerging energy markets.

The facility will integrate with Air Products’ existing hydrogen distribution infrastructure in the region, reinforcing the company’s established position within the Rotterdam industrial cluster.

Boudewijn Siemons, CEO of the Port of Rotterdam Authority, described the investment as a strengthening of the infrastructure required for industrial decarbonisation and a contribution to ensuring reliable, locally available hydrogen supply for businesses across the region.

He framed the development within Rotterdam’s broader commitment to enabling the growth of Europe’s hydrogen economy, building on the port’s role as the continent’s largest port and a central energy hub.

The project adds tangible momentum to Rotterdam’s hydrogen ambitions at a time when the port authority has identified investment hesitancy among terminal developers as a key challenge for the broader hydrogen import infrastructure pipeline, making domestic production capacity an important complement to the longer-term import terminal development agenda.
