Port of Rotterdam Authority supports Curaçao industrial zone redevelopment

The Port of Rotterdam Authority will assist in the revitalization of lands owned by the state-owned company Refineria di Kòrsou (RdK).

According to the statement, these lands, aside from their traditional uses, will host a variety of new sustainable economic activities designed to endure in the future. At the request of RdK, the Port of Rotterdam Authority will assign a manager for this initiative. This individual will oversee the redevelopment efforts and the attraction of new businesses.

In 2023, the Council of Ministers of Curaçao decided that not all the land previously allocated for refinery operations would continue to be used for such purposes. Instead, the unused land and facilities will be repurposed for sustainable industries. RdK is partnering with the Curaçao Ports Authority (CPA) in this redevelopment project.

The entire site spans approximately 2,500,000 m2 and is situated near the Schottegat port and the associated terminal at Bullenbaai.

RdK aims to cultivate a diverse range of activities here, with a particular emphasis on three sectors: renewable energy and raw materials; food and light industry; logistics and port operations.

The Port of Rotterdam Authority has extensive experience in managing port and industrial zones globally and has been actively involved in the development of Curaçao’s port for some time. The secondment of Sander Rijsdijk, currently overseeing Industry & Bulk at the Port Authority, is a testament to this collaboration.

The two-year secondment, with the possibility of extension, underscores the broader cooperation between the governments of the Netherlands and Curaçao. This partnership involves the exchange of expertise and scientific knowledge in areas such as wind energy, green hydrogen, solar energy, and energy storage.
