The Port of Riga has welcomed the first ship in Latvian history to deliver aviation fuel from the USA. During this event, SIA Naftimpeks also introduced a new fuel filling and discharging ramp. This facility represents the most modern infrastructure of its kind within the Baltic States. Consequently, the new ramp can handle up to 200,000 tons of fuel every month to supply Riga Airport and local gas stations.
Historically, SIA Naftimpeks operated primarily as a transit company. However, the business transformed its operations to adapt to current market demands. This shift required significant investment but opened new growth prospects for the terminal.
“Today we are celebrating two significant events – we are welcoming the first ship from the USA with aviation fuel in the port of Riga and Latvia, and at the same time we are opening a new, most modern fuel filling/discharging ramp in the Baltics,” said Ivars Blumbergs, Board Chairman at SIA Naftimpeks.
The tanker ship DAS delivered 20,000 tons of fuel during the inaugural call. This volume covers about two months of total fuel consumption for Riga Airport during the winter. Because of icy conditions, the icebreaker Varma escorted the vessel from the Irbe Strait to the port. The DAS is a 183-meter oil and chemical tanker with a deadweight tonnage of 50,261 tons.
Government officials highlighted the importance of this new supply chain for energy security. This move promotes competition and offers more choices for local businesses and residents. Furthermore, it strengthens economic ties between Europe and the United States.
“The supply of aviation fuel from the USA is a clear proof of Latvia’s ability to build a lasting transatlantic partnership,” said Viktors Valainis, Minister of Economics.
The construction of the new ramp cost more than two million euros. SIA Naftimpeks plans to handle approximately 10,000 tons of aviation fuel per month. In addition to aviation fuel, the infrastructure will support the handling of diesel and other fuel types.
“Aviation fuel supplies from the USA and the new ramp will certainly improve the competitiveness of our national airline AirBaltic and our Riga Airport,” said Kristaps Zaļais, Parliamentary secretary at the Ministry of Transport.
