Port of Prince Rupert cargo volumes rise 14% in 2025

The Port of Prince Rupert handled 26.3 million tonnes of cargo in 2025, a 14% increase compared to 2024, according to the Prince Rupert Port Authority (PRPA). The growth came during a period of significant infrastructure investment across the gateway.

“Our 2025 performance reflects strong collaboration across the Prince Rupert Gateway,” said Kurt Slocombe, Interim President of PRPA. He credited terminal operators, CN, the workforce and customers for unlocking capacity, increasing speed to market and diversifying trade flows valued at more than $60 billion annually.

Intermodal volumes through DP World Prince Rupert’s Fairview Container Terminal rose 20% year on year to 885,797 TEUs. Strong demand in the second half of 2025 supported the increase.

Canadian energy exports remained resilient. AltaGas’ Ridley Island Propane Export Terminal shipped nearly 2.4 million tonnes of liquefied petroleum gas, a 6% increase from 2024. Pembina’s Watson Island LPG Bulk Terminal handled 506,159 tonnes, up 1%. Volumes at Drax’s Westview Wood Pellet Terminal rose 3% to nearly 1.3 million tonnes.

Agricultural exports also strengthened. Prince Rupert Grain Terminal increased shipments of western Canadian crops by 8% following another strong harvest year. Coal exports rose 18% at Trigon Pacific Terminals, with metallurgical coal up 26% and thermal coal up 21%.

Cruise tourism continued to recover. Prince Rupert welcomed 67,771 cruise passengers in 2025, a 14% increase from the previous year.
