Port of Oakland surpasses 2 million TEUs in 2024

Port of Oakland experienced a strong performance in 2024, handling 2.26 million TEUs, marking a 9.5% increase compared to the previous year.

This growth reflects a sustained upward trend in consumer spending across the San Francisco Bay Area and the broader US market.

“Consumer demand has remained resilient, driving higher import volumes through the Port,” pointed out Bryan Brandes, Maritime Director at Port of Oakland. “This performance underscores the port’s strong foundation for continued growth and its critical role in global trade.”

In the full container segment, imports surged by 15% in 2024, while exports saw a steady 5.4% increase year over year, demonstrating balanced growth across key trade markets.

Despite an 8% decline in the overall US reefer market, the Port of Oakland showed resilience, limiting its reefer volume decline to just 4%, significantly outperforming the national trend. Furthermore, the reefer sector was led by beef shipments at 36,000 TEUs and pork at 31,000 TEUs, with most of this cargo processed directly at the Californian port.

In the dry cargo sector, furniture led import volumes with 110,000 TEUs, followed by plastic products at 60,000 TEUs and batteries at 37,000 TEUs, with the latter contributing US$6.7 billion in cargo value.

On the export side, wastepaper dominated with nearly 130,000 TEUs, while nut exports reached 83,000 TEUs, exceeding US$4 billion in value.
