Port of NY & NJ sees volume growth

The Port of New York and New Jersey has seen double-digit increases for total container volume, container imports, and autos in April, setting a new monthly record for rail volume.

The total record volume in April was 712,799TEU, which represents a 27.3% increase. “This surge brings our year through April total to approximately 2.85 million TEU,” noted the Port in its announcement.

In particular, imports rose by 26.5% in April, totaling 359,265TEUm while exports at the Port of New York and New Jersey totalled 121,671TEU, a 25% increase compared to the same period last year.

Additionally, export empties increased by 29.4% in April, totaling 229,295TEU compared to the same month in 2020.

The US port has also announced a record high in its rail volume for the month of April, totalling 63,896 containers, an increase of 13.1% from the previous year’s April figure. Meanwhile, the total rail volume for the year through April is 5.8% greater than the same period in 2020.

Auto volume also posted double-digit increases in April. A total of 43,036 autos moved through the Port of New York and New Jersey in April, a rise of 30.8 percent compared to April 2020. Auto volume for the year is 15.7 percent greater than the same period of 2020.
