Port of NY–NJ ends 2025 as second-busiest for loaded containers

The Port of New York and New Jersey finished 2025 as the second-busiest U.S. port for loaded containers.

Total container volume for the year reached 8.9 million TEUs. Imports and overall volumes remained broadly stable, while exports and rail traffic increased.

In December, total volume fell 5.2% year-on-year to 652,471 TEUs. Imports declined 5.4% to 329,914 TEUs, while exports dropped 6.3% to 105,438 TEUs.

For the full year, imports rose 1.7% to 4.51 million TEUs. Exports increased 6.5% to 1.44 million TEUs.

Rail volumes continued to grow. December rail traffic rose 12.8% to 55,113 containers, and full-year rail volume increased 12.4% compared with 2024.

Auto volumes declined, with 36,099 vehicles handled in December and total 2025 auto traffic down 11% year-on-year.
