Port of New York and New Jersey sets all time record in container traffic

The Port of New York and New Jersey (NYNJ) has marked its all-time record for container volumes in a single month, moving 796,704TEU in October.

The major port in the United States exceeded the previous October’s box traffic by 5.5%, while it also marked a continuously enhanced activity for the 15th consecutive month.

This number reflects a rise in container throughput of 20% from October 2019 and a 10% increase over September 2021, according to a statement.

Exports at the US East Coast port in October were more than 395,630TEU, while the port’s imports reached 401,065TEU. Meanwhile, rail traffic has been decreased by 8.5% over October 2020, with the port reporting that 60,123TEU transported by rail.

The Port Authority said that amid a global increase in shipping delays that have significantly affected other US ports, operations at the NYNJ Port remained fluid in October.

Regarding the overall container throughput during the January – October period, the US port has handled 7,455,786TEU, which translates to a year-on-year rise of 21.5%, while rail volumes have also improved by 2.8% to 598,005TEU, despite the current monthly decline.
