Port of New York and New Jersey sees rail and auto growth in January

The Port of New York and New Jersey started 2026 with strong gains in rail and auto volumes, alongside overall growth in container traffic.

Overall Throughput

Total volume reached 749,906 TEUs (411,584 containers) in January 2026, up 4% year-on-year.

Exports and Imports

Exports rose 13.9%, totaling 112,426 TEUs, with export empties also increasing 8.4%.

Imports declined slightly by 1.5% to 372,973 TEUs, while import empties surged 44.3%.

Rail and Auto Performance

Rail volumes climbed 11.5%, with 58,522 containers moved.

Auto volumes recorded the strongest growth. The port handled 30,758 vehicles, a 30.2% increase compared to January 2025.

The port’s January performance highlights resilient demand and strong activity in key segments, particularly rail and automotive logistics.
