Port of Montreal hosted open houses regarding its expansion project

The Montreal Port Authority hosted open houses on August 12 and 14 in the municipalities of Contrecœur and Verchères.

These sessions were organized in anticipation of possible preparatory work for the new container terminal, scheduled to begin in fall 2025, with the goal of keeping residents informed and fostering dialogue on this major infrastructure project.

From the earliest planning stages, the Port has sought opportunities to engage with local citizens, municipalities, business stakeholders, and First Nations communities, ensuring the project develops in an atmosphere of trust, communication, and respect for public concerns.

Around 250 residents attended the information sessions, where they met with specialists, received answers to their questions, and shared their views.

Participants could circulate freely among eight themed stations hosted by MPA experts and staff, including CEO Julie Gascon. Key topics addressed included:

  • The Port of Montreal and its current operations
  • Details of the expansion project and its proposed model
  • Work activities potentially starting as early as fall 2025
  • Monitoring measures for impacts on both the physical and human environment
  • Environmental initiatives and project-wide monitoring programs
  • Economic benefits and opportunities for local development
  • Transportation and mobility during construction
  • Ways for citizens to provide feedback and subscribe to project updates

The Contrecœur expansion project is expected to reach an important milestone on September 29, 2025, when preparatory activities could officially begin at the site.
