The Montreal Port Authority has officially submitted its notice of intent to begin preliminary construction work on the Contrecœur expansion project as early as September 29, 2025, subject to the final regulatory approvals.
Julie Gascon, President and CEO of the MPA, commented that once all necessary approvals are secured, they will be ready to launch this major strategic initiative, which is vital to the future resilience of the supply chains.
The initial phase of construction will focus on site preparation, laying the groundwork for more substantial activities anticipated in 2026.
All construction remains conditional upon receiving the appropriate federal and provincial authorizations. A detailed project timeline and activity breakdown are available on the Canadian Impact Assessment Registry.
As the implementation phase begins, the MPA reaffirmed its commitment to ongoing collaboration with stakeholders and to adhering to rigorous environmental and social responsibility standards.
The project will be executed in full compliance with regulatory requirements and the commitments previously made by the MPA.
The Contrecœur expansion is a cornerstone of Canada’s future logistics capacity, designed to address growing container demand and enhance national supply chain security.
Once completed, the new terminal will significantly increase the Port of Montreal’s container-handling capacity, with operations expected to begin by 2030.
The project is seen as essential to enabling Canadian and Quebec businesses to diversify their international trade markets and to reinforcing the country’s economic sovereignty.
